New 9 weeks

Grades were posted on Friday, and we begin a new term.  This week we will continue our study of miming, pantomiming and clowning.  Mime/clown projects are due on Thursday to coincide with Halloween.  I’ll have make-up for you, but provide your own props, hats, wigs, etc.

Students helping with the PTA program will meet during first period on Thursday, Oct. 31 and again on Nov.5 .  Make sure you know your lines and song!

We will have review on Friday and have a test on Monday, Nov. 4 on vocabulary from characters, plot, and pantomiming.

If you are planning to go on the New York trip, we must have the $50 non-refundable airfare deposit by Wed. to hold the fare.

Hope you have had a great weekend.  We’ve made it 1/4 of the way through the year – seems longer, I know!

Top 10 Christmas Songs from Musicals

Looking ahead to Christmas showcase.

Music Directing the School Musical

Christmas is a surprisingly popular topic in musical theatre! Here are my top 10 Christmas moments in musicals, with a couple of bonus titles for those of you who can’t get enough Yuletide Musical Magic. The first two are from movies that were made into stage musicals:

1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas from Meet Me In Saint Louis

You just have to start a Christmas post with a Garland. Don’tcha?

2. White Christmas from White Christmas

(Original Broadway Cast)

And the one from the movie:

3. We Need A Little Christmasfrom Mame

Here’s Jane Morgan singing from the show while a typically disoriented Ed Sullivan looks on:

And in all its cheesy glory by Mitzi Gaynor:

4. God Bless Us Everyone from Alan Menken’s A Christmas Carol

This from the Kelsey Grammer film (you may have to watch an ad first)

5. It’s Beginning to Look…

End of 9 weeks

Grades are being posted this week with report cards out at the end of the week.

We have original character monologues due tomorrow.  Students should be prepared to present their written monologues from memory.

Monday and Tuesday are Explore testing dates – students should be on time and ready to test during 1st and 2nd periods, and possibly into 3rd period on Tuesday.

All students will need a valid email address to access the KUDOR Career Assessment Program that the state is now utilizing.  Electives classes are signing students up this semester so they can begin using the information during computer classes this year and next year.  My dates in the lab are Thursday and Friday of this week.

This week is also Homecoming Week – each day is dress up day starting with Decades Day tomorrow.  Students are encouraged to dress up according to the theme, keeping in mind there is still a dress code.

Last week I met with students who were interested in the proposed New York trip during Spring Break.  The trip will cost approximately $1100.00, and intent forms are due on Thursday, Oct. 24th.  We need 20 students in order for the trip to proceed.  I’ve had lots of interest, but understand that the costs will prohibit some students from attending.  I contacted 4 different student travel companies, and this was the best price.  Payments will be divided into 4 installments with the first due in November.

November 1st will be the homecoming dance at school.

Please put November 5th on your calendar for the next PTA meeting.

Class Notes

Our first field trip was a success.  31 Creative Language Arts students and two teachers attended the Springer Opera House production of Pinkalicious, the Musical.  It was great to see the way scene changes are conducted, and tech choices that were made, in addition to enjoying live theatre.  SGS student, Garrett Norris was a member of the ensemble for this production.

We have been doing scene and character work in class.  Next week, we will finish our movie monologues and write original character monologues to be presented to the class.  Class presentations will be on Monday, October 21st.

I am investigating opportunities for a trip to New York over Spring Break.  Any South Girard student who is interested in traveling to NYC with us should attend an interest meeting on Thursday morning at 7:15 in Rm 12.  The trip costs will be around $1100 per student which includes airfare, 2 meals/day and two Broadway shows.  We need a minimum of 20 students for the trip.  Details will be provided at the meeting.

Still to come in class – mime and clown work, musical theatre, and plans for our Class Showcase.

Week 7

We are mid-way through week seven of the 2013-14 school year.  We have a test tomorrow on vocabulary terms associated with voice, movement, and improvisation.  Be prepared to explain some of your answers in complete sentences.  We have finished improvisation which was lots of fun.  I am sure we will add a few games here and there before the end of the semester.  Next Thursday is our first field trip. We are going to see Pinkalicious at the Springer Opera House.  One of our SGS students is in the production.  Additionally two more of our students are members of the cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in it’s last weekend at the Springer.  So proud of our students.  Image
